Motorist's safety is a top priority in Texas; as a result, vehicles registered in Texas are required to pass an annual inspection to ensure compliance with safety standards.
On March 1, 2015, vehicle inspection stations no longer collect the state’s portion of the inspection fee. At the time of inspection, you pay only the inspection station’s portion of the fee. The state’s portion of the inspection fee is collected at the time of registration or renewal.
All Texas registered vehicles are required to receive an annual inspection. All inspections include a comprehensive safety inspection; however, some vehicles are required to have an emissions test in addition to the safety inspection.

Out of State Motorists. If your vehicle is currently out of state and you are unable to complete a Texas vehicle inspection in order to renew your registration, you may self-certify that the vehicle is out of state and will be permitted to register online, by mail, or in person.
